April 19, 2025 – We had a great turnout! Jennifer Sterling-Folker, the chair of our Ashford PP steering committee, delivered an entertaining and informative presentation, as always. The question and answer session after the presentation was interactive and thought-provoking as well. And when there wasn’t an easy answer to a question – “How do I protect my native plants from slugs?”, folks shared stories and commiserated. We also shared a few good laughs – beer traps do not work, and are a waste of good beer!

One young woman had a question that we were stumped by at the time – “Are there any native plants that don’t flower?” Her kitty is obsessed with catching and eating the bumbles that flowers attract. I didn’t think until afterward that Carex pensylvanica (Pennsylvania Sedge) would be a great addition to her part sun/part shade site – no flowers, just lush foliage. I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name – whoever you are, I hope you’re reading this!

Many people had questions about where to buy native plants. It’s much easier to find native plants than it used to be – UCONN has compiled a comprehensive Connecticut Native Perennial, Tree, and Shrub Availability List. Their page includes links to lists of Connecticut nurseries that carry native plants. The nurseries are scattered around the state, so hopefully you’ll find a source near you.
Thanks to Kathy Demers from the Willington Conservation Commission for inviting Jennifer to speak at the Willington Library! Our next event is June 28th at Westford Hill Distillery. We’ll have a table at Summer’s Palette, and fantastic day of art, music, and poetry, and Ashford PP will be giving away free native plants.
Hope to see you there!
– Melinda
